Today marks the first day of October, which means that it is the official Halloween season! Most children love Halloween, especially since they get to dress up in fun costumes and go trick-or-treating for candy! However, with Halloween being at the very end of the month, your child may be anxious to start enjoying some of the spooky spirit. In today’s post, we will provide you with a few ideas for fun Halloween activities you can do with your toddler to help them get ready for the main event!
At Sunshine Starts in Yorktown Heights, we strive to offer the early childhood education that your little one deserves. We provide your child with a structured environment where they will be able to learn through interaction and exploration, which can help foster a life-long love of learning. Host a Halloween Party!
Not all Halloween parties have to be spooky, and if you’re looking for a way to start the season off on the right foot, then a Halloween party for your toddler and their friends may be the best way to do so!
You can plan this party for the beginning of the month, or you can wait until later and plan an event where everyone wears a costume! Plan fun Halloween activities that are age-appropriate for toddlers, such as a few easy crafts or Halloween-themed games. Depending on what time you schedule the party, you may also want to set up some food and drinks for the kids, as well as something that will keep the parents happy, too.
Decorate or Carve Pumpkins!
Carving pumpkins is a Halloween tradition, and you may be under the impression that your little one is too young to participate, but that’s not necessarily the case! While the actual act of carving the pumpkin with sharp tools may be a little too much for your little one, there are still plenty of ways they can help out and still enjoy the tradition. For example, if you usually buy your pumpkins from the grocery store, consider taking your kiddo to a pumpkin farm. Most pumpkin farms offer more than just the fun of exploring a pumpkin patch, including petting zoos, slides, and more!
Once you have your pumpkins, you can either carve them the traditional way or you can get out paint, glue, feathers, googly eyes, and other fun craft supplies to help turn your pumpkin into a masterpiece! Not only will your toddler be able to create their own pumpkin with little to no help, but you can also make it a competition between other family members!
Make Halloween Treats
Cooking and baking is always a great way to bond with your child, and if it’s something you enjoy, or even something you’ve never done before, then now may be a good time to start! There are many different recipes available online, and there’s a good chance that you can find one that you and your kiddo can do together. Find a few kid-friendly recipes, and have your toddler decide which ones you make. During the actual baking or cooking process, have them help you pour in ingredients so that they feel like they’re involved! Once the treats are complete, you can sit down and enjoy them together.
Hand Out Candy
When you have young kids, there’s a good chance that you will take them trick-or-treating while it is still light outside. However, trick-or-treating typically lasts well into the night. If you want to get your little one more involved in the Halloween spirit, you can have them help you hand out candy!
There’s a good chance that you and your little one will be done trick-or-treating by dinner time, which means they will have a few more hours to help you hand out candy. Allow your toddler to stay in their costume, and give them the job of answering the door and picking out which pieces of candy to give to the trick-or-treaters.
Go to a Local Fall Festival
Fall is a season that almost everyone enjoys, which means there are sure to be dozens of fun festivals or events around your town. Keep an eye out for flyers posted around your neighborhood that advertise fall events or even Halloween parties! You might even find a few events that give you and your kiddo an excuse to dress up and trick-or-treat, whether that be a Trunk or Treat event or the opportunity to trick-or-treat at a local business!
